If you’re watching this chapter, you have a domain purchased outside of Wix. There are two ways you can connect it to your Wix site. Via nameservers, and also through pointing.
In this chapter we’ll talk about using nameservers. While we HIGHLY recommend this method, in rare cases you may need to connect through pointing, which is more complex. If that’s the case, skip ahead to Chapter 5.
Quick note! After you connect a domain to your Wix site, we suggest you then transfer domain ownership, or hosting, to Wix. For info on how to do that, watch Chapter 6 next.
Still here? Great! Let’s get into Nameservers, also known as DNS, or even just NS.
Before you start, make sure you have the log in details for the domain registrar where you originally bought the domain. You will also need access to the email address connected to that account. Without these, you won’t be able to move forward.
Let’s say, you purchased your domain through another registrar, like GoDaddy. To connect your domain to your Wix site, go to your Domains and Mailboxes app. Select “Connect a Domain you Already Own.”
Type in the name of the domain you own, and select the registrar where you purchased it. If you don’t see your registrar in the list, no worries. Just choose Other. Click on next and you will be shown a screen with Wix’s nameservers. Keep this page open because you will need them in just a minute!
In another tab, sign into your account through your domain registrar. Find the place in your registrar where you can manage your Nameservers or NS records. Copy the nameservers you see on Wix and paste them where your domain registrar prompts you. In most cases, Wix will also show you a slideshow to help with the process.
If you’re having trouble, you can always visit the Wix Help Center. You can also look in the Help, Support or Search section of your domain registrar.
Once you’ve pasted the addresses into your domain registrar, head back to Wix and click Next. You’ll see a message that your domain will be officially connected within 48 hours. And there you have it!
At any time, you can check on the status of your new domain by using the Wix Domain Troubleshooter, available in the Wix Help Center. Or, simply type the domain name into your browser. If your Wix website appears, the connection is complete!
When your domain is connected, you should receive an email from Wix letting you know that the connection was successful. Congratulations! Now it’s time to spread the word about your brand new, live website!
Now that your domain is connected to your Wix website, you can go ahead and transfer the ownership of your domain to Wix. Why? Because it can make your life more simple. If you manage the domain at Wix, you’ll only have to keep track of the log in and payment information with one company. For step by step instructions on how to transfer your domain management, jump ahead to Chapter 6.
